The Office of Sustainability is offering free deconstruction trainings from The ReUse Institute, the training division of The ReUse People of America, which has trained over 50 contractors and 500 deconstruction workers throughout the country.
Deconstruction, also referred to as salvage, is a cost-effective and environmentally responsible alternative to conventional building demolition. Deconstruction is the systematic disassembly of a building in order to recover the maximum economic and environmental value of materials through reuse and recycling.
There will be a 2-day overview training for contractors, architects and government staff (construction, deconstruction, demolition, solid waste, recycling, planning and building department staff). We will be learning about the entire deconstruction process, tax deductions, and visit a home that will be deconstructed as part of a training. There will also be a discussion on incentives to promote deconstruction. The training will be from 8:30 AM -5:00 PM at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 725 Monte Diablo Avenue in San Mateo.
