Beverage Container Recycling

Starting January 1, 2024, California’s Beverage Container Recycling Program adds new beverages and new containers.

Only beverage containers purchased in California can be redeemed for a refund. New additions may not have CRV labels until July 1, 2025.

The container examples below are not the only eligible containers nor an endorsement of specific products.

CRV Payments

Customers can request to be paid by count for up to 50 CRV beverage containers of each material type, per transaction (50 glass, 50 aluminum, 50 plastic).

  • The law does not restrict the number of transactions a consumer may take into a recycling center per day.
  • The customer may get back in line as many times as they want after each transaction, but the recycling centers are still obligated to enforce daily load limits (100 lbs for aluminum and plastic | 1,000 lbs. for glass).

As a matter of business efficiency, Bottle Bill regulations allow CRV recyclers to make weight-based payments beyond the 50-count threshold based on per pound payment rates established by CalRecycle.

  • These rates are determined through ongoing CalRecycle surveys that account for different weights of beverage containers.
  • The below CRV per pound rates are periodically adjusted.

California Redemption Value (CRV) is 5 cents for each beverage container less than 24 ounces and 10 cents for each container 24 ounces or greater.

All materials must be sorted before arriving and free of debris, liquid, or other foreign substances. No sorting allowed on property.

Additional notes: California driver’s license or vehicle license plate number is required for transactions over $100.
