Employee Commute Benefits
Looking for a better way to commute? Shift provides incentives and resources for County employees to save on travel costs, reduce stress, and choose sustainable options like carpooling, transit, or biking. Make your commute easier while supporting cleaner air and less traffic.
Government Climate Action Plan

Sustainability Policies
The County is committed to reducing environmental impact through sustainable purchasing and waste reduction policies. The County Foodware Policy prohibits single-use plastic foodware and encourages the use of natural, fiber-based compostables when necessary. It also provides guidelines for managing foodware accessories at public events and requires reusable foodware for large County-hosted events with 75 or more attendees.
Additionally, procurement guidelines support the purchase of sustainable paper products, mulch, and renewable natural gas in accordance with state mandates. Learn how these initiatives affect your department and find resources to help with compliance.
Surplus Property Program
Does your department have surplus property that’s ready for retirement, or need new office equipment? The County Surplus Property Program offers items free to County departments, local non-profits, and agency partners and will find your used equipment new homes.
Zero Waste: Recycling, Compost, and Landfill Resources
The San Mateo County Sustainability Department manages the waste and recycling programs within County departments and aims to achieve Zero Waste at all facilities through source reduction and waste diversion actions such as reducing, reusing, composting, and recycling.
