Potential Gate Rate Increase at Pescadero Transfer Station
The Pescadero Transfer Station’s operating costs have outweighed gate fee revenues for nearly 30 years, resulting in an ongoing operating deficit that continues to increase.
The Board of Supervisors last approved an increase to PTS gate rates on January 9, 2024, and before that, on January 26, 2016. Neither of these rate increase actions resulted in operating costs and revenues aligning.
As of 2026, the fund that subsidized the PTS’s operations in the late 1990s and through the 2000s, is depleted. PTS operations are currently being subsidized by the County’s general fund revenues. The County must identify both near0term and long-term solutions to provide reliable, sustainably-funded solid waste management solutions for the south coast community.
County staff and a subcommittee of the Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council (PMAC) have been working together to identify a short-term solution to the operating deficit – including a potential rate increase – which will be presented publicly at the October 13 PMAC meeting.
